"Variety is the Spice of Life"
dedication to ABCD founder Melodie Wilson Oldenburg
Within the countless cards my family received after my mother's death were anecdotes, inspiration and prayers. Among them, two expressed more about her character and the way she lived her life than I expected to find:"She flipped the script on cancer and used it as an opportunity to enlighten."
"Trying to capture even the smallest sliver of Melodie's spirit is like trying to contain a rainbow."
Taking literal meaning from these heartfelt thoughts, I attempted to portray a tiny snapshot of who she was. Her spirit and the brightness of her personal light are seen through color. The shape repetition represents her consistent battle against and her fight for those struggling with breast cancer. The variety in size and color and the seeming randomness of the pattern are for her passion for life and absolutely everything it had to offer.
